Silently,
patiently, Bill sits in his tree stand. This is day three of the bear hunt.
It’s not that Bill hasn’t had good opportunities. On day one, Bill passed up
on the medium sized black bear. He’s been in this tree stand before. Last year
was a good year. And the year before was his best, a 345 pound black bear, the
rug lies in his study. This year Bill is looking for a bear in a colour phase, a
bear worthy of a full mount. On day two, Bill passed up both a young cinnamon
colored bear and a chocolate brown, with her cubs. Bill is waiting for the big
lone male to come to the bait before ...he
draws his weapon. The quiet of a Canadian fall afternoon keeps him calm. The
sounds of the forest surround him as do the tall stands of pine trees and the
poplars changing colour. That tree over there has the auburn colored leaves,
almost the colour Bill is waiting for on his trophy mount.
A
rustling below grabs his ears. He resists the temptation to swivel around.
He’s made that mistake before. This time it’s not the big bruin he is hoping
for but another big white tail buck sniffing the ground. Bill makes a mental
note to plan two trips next year, bear and white tail.
Five
years ago Bill first heard the story from Wayne, a long time friend and hunting
partner, about his last trip to
Canada
’s northern forests. He knew the detail of the hunt in minute detail, as if it
happened in slow motion. You are almost there with him each time he tells the
story. You could probably tell it yourself.
Wayne
’s trophy stands almost 7 feet tall in his house. He invited Bill along that
trip, but work commitments kept Bill back home. After the third time hearing the
story, and the first look at
Wayne
’s Saskatchewan Black Bear, Bill knew he was going next year. The challenge
was on. Now Bill sits, silently, patiently, waiting for his time, his
trophy, for his story to be told. A rustling from the left heightens your
senses. Bill’s heart pounds!. This is the one! The big cinnamon bear moves
cautiously through the bushes. These beasts are extremely cautious. Maybe
that’s why you rarely see one this size. The bear lumbers into the shooting
lane. The weapon is raised with the sights confidently on the vitals, Bill's
story begins…
